Family and Consumer Sciences

Mission

Family and Consumer Sciences is based on the family and on the relationship between work and the family. The mission of the Family and Consumer Sciences education program is to empower people to effectively manage emerging life issues by applying skills, analyzing options, and strengthening interpersonal competencies.   Participation in this program enables students to develop tangible transferable skills essential to manage their own personal, family and career lives, and develop insights into the interaction within families and explore the relationship between work and family. Family and Consumer Sciences provides academic learning in an activity based setting providing students with a firm foundation in the knowledge and skills needed for a successful transition from high school to adulthood.

 

Goals

Family & Consumer Sciences is a comprehensive, competency-based instructional program that enables students to:

  • Develop life management skills

  • Apply academic, critical thinking, and communication skills

  • Provide opportunities for personal development and preparation for adult life

  • Emphasize good nutritional habits throughout all stages of the life cycle

  • Develop understanding of human growth and development

  • Examine the relationships among individuals, families, communities and the environments in which they function

  • Develop parenting skills

  • Recognize the role of individuals and families as consumers of goods and services

  • Investigate technological and scientific advances related to family life

  • Practice leadership skills and community involvement

  • Examine individual and family roles in establishing career goals

  • Utilize new technology in the classroom

  • Develop career awareness, technological knowledge, and related skills so they can make viable career choices and become employable in a variety of family & consumer sciences related careers, facilitating the transition from school to career
